Interrail Diaries: Ljubljana & Lake Bled

Lake Bled

Travelling into Slovenia, we knew that we wanted to visit Lake Bled the most. So, we set aside a day in which we would get the bus from the capital, Ljubljana, where we were staying at a hostel for a few nights. The bus cost us between €30-40, and that included admission in to the castle, and took just over an hour.

I had seen so many photos of Lake Bled in which it looked like a fairytale land, and so my expectations going in were pretty high. We got there at around 12.30pm, and were there for around 7 hours or so. I would say that this was a perfect amount of time. We managed to do everything that we wanted to do, and also relaxed at the lakeside and multiple stops around the lake.

Whilst at the lake we did a few things. To begin with, we simply walked around part of the lake. It isn’t a huge lake; to be honest it was a lot smaller than I imagined, and so you could definitely walk around the whole thing in a day easily (I think). When we were walking around, we passed a rowing boat rental place. So we decided that we would revisit a bit later in the day and do a spot of rowing.

There are various points around Lake Bled that you can sit and relax for a while. Well, technically, you could sit and relax anywhere you want, but there are various official places for you to relax that have benches, picnic tables and such.

After relaxing for a little while, we walked back to the boat rental place and rented a rowing boat. It was €15 for an hour, and it was so much fun, although a lot harder than I thought that it would be!

After getting our arm workout on the boat, it was time to work out our legs and walk up the very steep hill to the castle. The castle is pretty small, but still worth the hike up. The views from the castle that overlook the lake are beautiful, and there are little quirky shops that you can buy traditional Slovenia souvenirs. There is also a cafe where you can try the famous Bled cake if that is something you want to try!

The City

We spend one full day in Ljubljana city centre. There isn’t a great deal to do there to be completely honest, so for me, one day was definitely enough time to do everything that I wanted to do.

All of the main sights are within walking distance of each other. The main sights that we visited include:

  • Triple Bridge
  • Ljubljana Cathedral
  • Dragon Bridge
  • River boat rides
  • Prešeren Square

There are other things that you can do in Ljubljana, of course, that I haven’t mentioned. A few of these are:

  • National museum of Slovenia
  • National gallery of Slovenia
  • Museum of Modern Art
  • Slovenian museum of natural history
  • Ljubljana zoo
  • Ljubljana Castle

Next stop…Bratislava!
