I think it is often underestimated just how big the USA is, I definitely underestimate it. However, it becomes apparent when your flight from New York to Las Vegas takes almost as much time as your flight from Manchester to New York.
Landing in Las Vegas, the heat hit us as soon as we stepped off the plane. If we thought that it was hot in New York, we were in for a shock when we landed in Vegas. With temperatures in the 40s, it was definitely a change from what I am used to. Where I live, we are lucky for it to reach 14°C , never mind 40°C, and even higher.
Whilst in Vegas, we stayed at the Treasure Island hotel. I am very lucky in that this was my second time visiting Vegas; previously we stayed at the Mandalay Bay Hotel. I was thrilled walking into my hotel room to see that I had a double bed to myself meaning that I could starfish to my hearts content. Being that it was late in the evening when we arrived at our hotel, we just stayed in our hotel and went for a quick bite to eat before heading off to bed.
We didn’t have a day-to-day itinerary while we were there and we basically just took the days as they came, doing as we pleased. On the first day that we were there, we walked through a few of the hotels that were near by our own. I still can’t get over how amazing and grandiose the hotels are, fitting shopping malls, water fountain displays, theatres, casinos, restaurants and so much more into them, whilst still displaying the beautiful architecture.
After having a wander round we headed back to our hotel and went down to the pool to relax for a couple of hours, and to cool down!
That night we went to see Cirque Du Soleil: Mystère which was being performed in our hotel. It astonishes me how talented the acrobats are and the amount of work that goes into producing and performing one of the Cirque Du Soleil shows. That is now the third one that I have seen. During my previous visit to Las vegas we went to see Cirque Du Soleil: Ka. I would definitely recommend going to see one of their shows if you’re ever in Vegas. There are lots to choose from, as they have a variety of different shows in different hotels, each with a different theme.
The following day, we again didn’t have anything in particular planned. We decided to take the bus to the opposite end of the strip and walk through some of the hotels at that end.
In the evening we took the bus to Fremont Street, or ‘Old/Downtown Las Vegas’. There was an overhead zip wire that I would have loved to have gone on, but sadly when we went to get tickets there was a two hour wait and we just didn’t have time to wait. If I ever get to go back to Las Vegas I will definitely make the trip to Fremont Street even if it’s just to ride the zip wire. The area is full of casinos (duh, it’s Vegas) and restaurants as well as street artists – a lot of which are lacking in clothing FYI… We stayed there for a little while, having something to eat, but of course being under 21 means that you can’t stay in the casinos, and so we left and headed back to our hotel after exploring the area.
On our last day in Vegas, I wanted to go to Carlos Bakery, being an avid watcher of Cake Boss, so that I could try their famous Cannoli.
First though, we got the bus to Circus Circus which is a hotel that is known for the inside theme park that it holds. We had breakfast in the hotel and then had a walk into the theme park. We didn’t go on any of the rides though as there were only a couple that we would have went on; plus Carlos Bakery was calling…
The bakery is in the Venetian hotel which is famous for it’s artificial canals with gondolas that you can ride. It really is a beautiful hotel. At the bakery I got a cannoli – of course – and also a red velvet cupcake. Verdict: the cupcake was delicious, however, the cannoli had a hint of cinnamon which is a no no for me, the chocolate chip cream inside was nice though!
After going to the bakery, we went back to the hotel for one last dip in the pool to relax before going out in the evening to see a show. Sitting in the pool I caught a beautiful sunburn in the shape of my swimming costume halter neck tie. However, I was glad to see that I was actually capable of catching the sun, having spent multiple days in temperatures of 40°C and upwards and time prior to this in New York, and still remaining as pale as when I left the UK.
In the evening we went to the Paris hotel to see the Jersey Boys musical, which I would highly recommend, although it really is not suitable for young children, there is a lot of swearing involved. For our final meal we went to the Cheesecake Factory – no holiday to America is complete without a trip to the Cheesecake Factory, the food there is delicious, but be warned, the portions are huge!
Following our meal we had a nice walk back to our hotel, stopping outside the Bellagio hotel to watch the water fountain display. It was really beautiful to watch, especially in the dark with the lights of the hotel behind the water.
Getting back to our hotel, it was time to pack our cases so that they were ready for the following morning.
We had to get up and go to the airport at about 10am. Our flight was in the afternoon and we travelled through the night meaning that we got to see the sunset from above the clouds. We flew right through the sunset in the USA and into the sunrise in the UK. I find it so hard to sleep on planes, meaning that I was shattered when we arrived back in the UK. We still had a two and a half hour drive home from the airport, so I had a snooze in the car!
I had such a good time in both New York and Las Vegas and they are both places that I want to revisit in the future, preferably when I am 21 so that I can stand in the casinos without being banished to the outer wall – yes that happened. I would definitely recommend going to these places if you ever get the chance, there is just so much going on and so many things to do, even if you’re under 21 in Vegas there is plenty to do to keep busy.
Until next time, America!
