A Few Words to my Future Self

I have had a great life so far, but looking back I can’t help but remember the many things that I did that make me cringe and wish I could go back and do things differently. The reality of life is that you cannot go back and change the way you acted or the way things worked out, you just have to accept what has happened and move on. This thought prompted me to think ‘What do I want my future self to be like?’ And so here are the things I want to tell my future self and the things I want to have accomplished in my lifetime…

  • If you haven’t travelled the world yet, DO IT. NOW. My ambition in life is to be financially stable enough that I can live ‘on the road’, so to speak, and travel everywhere I possibly can, experiencing as much of the world as possible. Spontaneity is a good thing, and a random adventure to a new place is exciting and a great way to experience new things. So, future self, if you have given up on this dream, get it back quickly and go anywhere at all to start off the adventure!
  • If you are in a job that you hate, quit. I don’t care if you are in a ‘safe, financially stable job’, if you are unhappy in the job you are in, then all the money in the world won’t fix that, and let’s be honest, you can’t spend it if you’re stuck at work all the time. Get a job you love so that it doesn’t feel like going to work.
  • Don’t settle. There’s nothing wrong with having high expectations or high standards. There’s no fun in being ‘realistic’, and maybe sometimes you have to be sensible in the choices you make, but don’t settle for things that you aren’t sure about or are unhappy with. Aim high and don’t let anyone discourage you from doing so!
  • Make decisions for you, not other people. Too often we make decisions based on how we think other people will react or if they will be upset with our decisions. What you have to remember is that this is your life, and if you aren’t happy with it then it’s up to you to change the things that can be changed.
  • Finally, just enjoy your life! Don’t be afraid to make any changes no matter how scary they may be or how doubtful people are that you will be able to do it. Live your life for you and enjoy every single minute of it.

The most important thing is to enjoy your life – to be happy – it’s all that matters.” – Audrey Hepburn
