Interrail Diaries: Prague

First of all, apologies for the delay in blog posts, I have been very busy travelling and haven’t had a lot of spare time to get the posts written. Hopefully they will be a bit more frequent from now on! So, let us get on with the post…

Prague is a place that, surprisingly, I hadn’t really thought about visiting before, and so I didn’t really know what to expect when arriving there. Arriving late at night, we navigated our way to the hostel we were staying at, which happened to be located just off Charles Bridge. We stayed at the (aptly named) Charles Bridge Economic Hostel and I would definitely recommend it to other travellers who are looking to stay at low budget accommodation yet still want somewhere that is going to be clean and of a decent quality.

On our first day in Prague we went to the Prague Castle. One of our favourite activities, which you will get to see over the course of the next few blog posts, is visiting and touring castles and palaces, and so we were not able to go to Prague and not go here. You can pay for a range of tour options, with some of the cheaper ones only allowing you to go into a limited number of rooms/buildings. We got the ‘circuit A’ ticket, which allows you into the majority of the castle. It worked out at around 350CZK if I remember rightly, which works out at about £12, pretty good if you ask me! It was worth the visit, and the long walk up the very steep hill to get to the castle itself. Everywhere you go in Prague, the buildings and streets are just beautiful and so any walk that you go on, be it up a steep hill or down a little narrow street is more than enjoyable and there are so many interesting things to see.

In the castle grounds, we went into a cathedral (another one of our favourite activities) which had some pretty impressive architecture. We also visited a display of the evolution of battle armour where you could also have a go at shooting a crossbow. So, naturally, I channelled by inner Daryl Dixon, coincidentally sporting my Daryl top, and had a go at shooting a target. It took a practice shot before I kind of got the hang of it, and I was actually not too bad, if I do say so myself! I think it was 50CZK for three shots and it was a pretty fun novel activity to kill 5 minutes whilst walking around the castle grounds.

There are so many other areas of the castle that we visited, I would recommend going yourself if you’re in Prague and like us, enjoy a good castle!

That evening we went on a Ghosts and Legends of Prague tour. Our hostel offered free tickets which was an added bonus to staying there! It lasted around an hour and a half and although it wasn’t very spooky and we didn’t see any ghosts (booooo) it was fun and interesting, and something different. Plus it was free so we couldn’t complain!

We decided to go for a night out that night, to see the nightlife of Prague. Well, I did at least, some of us didn’t make it past pre drinks…I went out with our hostel roommates, which was good so I was still able to go out and have a good time. If you want a good place for a night out in Prague, check out Karlovy lázně. It is a five floor night club, each floor with a different music theme, e.g, oldies, dance, hip hop, etc. There is an entrance fee but you basically get 5 clubs for the price of one which is okay in my book!

The next day we had a chill day, recovering from the night before so not much was done that day…We ended up booking two extra nights in our hostel as we loved it in Prague so much and wanted more time to explore.

The following day we were back to our usual self (kind of) and so we got up and headed out for some more exploration of Prague. We walked down the river to the dancing house which is an unusual looking building on the opposite side of the river to the castle. It is in ‘Prague 2’, so a bit further south of the old town. We then walked down to Shooters island which is in the middle of the Vlatava river and is accessed by some steps down from the Most Legií Bridge.

We walked back down the river side and happened to stumble across the John Lennon Wall while looking for our way back to the Charles Bridge. This prompted a photo stop for a while…

The next day we had to get up early to catch a train to Krakow, and so it was an early and chilled out last night for us in Prague.

***

Due to a change of circumstances towards the end of our interrailing, we ended up returning to Prague for a few days before our flight home from there and so if in some of the photos it looks like I’m wearing two different outfits on the same day, it is because it was a different day from the second time there. But we returned to the John Lennon Wall the second time and those photos turned out better so I included those instead haha! Just to clear up any confusion…

During our second trip there, we went into the old town, and there was a market there with food stalls and various other stalls which was nice as it made a change of scenery from the last visit.

We also went on another night out, one that we both made it to, to celebrate our last night of our interrailing trip before we had to return home *cries*.

Other things to do/see in Prague that we also did are:

  • The astronomical clock
  • Old Town centre
  • St Nicholas’ church
  • Church of our Lady before Týn
  • Charles Bridge

Other things to do that we didn’t do:

  • River boat cruise
  • Wenceslas Square
  • If you like shopping, the Palladium shopping centre.
